How to Heart a Story on Instagram (Android & iOS)

Have you wondered how to like a story on Instagram? In this guide, you’ll learn how to heart a story on Instagram on both Android and iOS devices.

Meanwhile, Instagram is introducing a new feature called Private Story Likes, which allows you to like someone’s Insta Story without having to send them a direct message. Previously, whatever answer you wrote to someone about a Story, whether it was an emoji or a full-fledged message, appeared in their DM inbox; with this new feature, you can express your gratitude for a Story without clogging up the user’s DMs.

However, The aim here is to make sure that people can express more support for one another, as well as to clean up DMs a little bit,” Mosseri said in the video, stressing that liking someone’s Instagram Story does not result in a new direct message to the user. “A huge part of it is focusing DMs on the dialogues between you and the people you care about,” I remarked at the start of the year.

Furthermore, while some of Instagram’s most recent inventions and additions have been met with mixed reviews, the Story likes feature looks to be a hit so far — at least among those who have commented on Mosseri’s video. Story likes appear to be a convenient way to show your friends and family that you care without overwhelming them with a million reply DMs (most of whom I leave untouched, since I feel bad about opening but not responding). Also, unlike replies, the new Instagram Story function is significantly more straightforward.

Note: The steps are the same for both Android and iOS devices.

Step 1. Open the Instagram app on your Android or iPhone.

Step 2. Now, view any IG story from the top of the screen.

Step 3. Once the Instagram story is opened, tap the heart icon next to the DM icon.

Notably, Stories will not include like counts, which is a significant departure from the strategy taken by Instagram for users’ main feeds. Instagram (which is now part of Meta) tested concealing like counts on the main feed for more than two years before deciding to leave them up by default, but users can choose to hide them on their posts.

There is no public count for likes on Stories, but you can check who left a like on your Stories by viewing the view sheet. “The goal here is to ensure that individuals can show more support for one another while also cleaning up DMs a little bit,” Mosseri explained.
